Pangseng is a stable indigenous Adamawa language of Nigeria belonging to the Niger-Congo class. Dialects include Pangseng, Komo and Jega. Pangseng is spoken in Jinl ri (Jimleri), located on the Zing-Lankaviri road in Karim Lamido Local Government Area (LGA) in Taraba State, Nigeria.
The major occupation of the Pangseng people is agriculture. They grow maize, rice, sorghum, millet and cassava. Their cash crops include coffee, tea, ground nuts, cotton and yams. They also herd cattle, sheep and goats. Some breed rabbits and pigs. Communities along the river fish all year round. Others make a living through pottery, cloth-weaving, dyeing, mat-making, carving, embroidery and blacksmithing.
More than half the population of the Pangseng people group have become Christians. Ethnoreligion is still prominent in the region and likely influences their beliefs. Animism, which holds that natural physical entities such as animals, plants, and even inanimate objects possess a spiritual essence, is a major part of the ethnoreligion belief system.
Pangseng is thought to be used as the first language by all in the ethnic community. It is not taught in schools. Survey work would be helpful in assessing in what domains Panseng, English, Hausa, and neighboring languages are being used and by what age groups. Community leaders may be interested in language development to preserve their language. Workshops that would expose participants to language vitality and potential short-term development and translation projects may become available.
Pray Pangseng community and church leaders will seek help analyzing their language's vitality to determine what language development and translation projects are needed.
Pray Pangseng community and church leaders will pursue oral or written translation projects to provide their people with God s Word in their heart language.
Pray that Pangseng people can receive God s word in their heart language to help them understand Christian doctrine and discern false beliefs.
